There is a saying in the mountains which goes like ‘the valley is inviting you’. And yes indeed if you have heard the Indian Classical Music album by Shiv-Hari ‘The call of the valley’ our adventure here will invoke that spirit of joy and a prevailing sense of happiness thereafter.
Chanshal Peak 4520mts is the highest peak in Shimla district, sitting atop the Chanshal pass 3750mts, open only during the summer months from May till October and is the gateway to forlorn villages of Dodra and Kwar. The beautiful vistas all around and Rolling Meadows interspersed with apple orchards and glacial streams make this region pristine and pure. Our short and exciting ride starts from Narkanda, (where we arrive and scale up to Hatu peak and spend a day in mountain leisure) winding its way through orchards and pine forests to Baghi, from where we ride on the ridgeline towards Sungri to descend towards Rohru, by the banks of the river Pabbar. The third day is an adrenalin rush as we ride towards the Chanshal pass, an exhilarating and challenging 62kms ride. The next morning we scale the 4520m Chanshal peak and thereafter drive back to Shimla. Expect the best hospitality with great meals and camaraderie, with a night stay at Narkanda and Himachal tourism’s Hotel Chanshal and a night under the stars with camping on the sprawling glades of Chanshal pass.
Board the evening Volvo bus for Shimla from Himachal Bhawan, Safdar Hashmi marg, New Delhi.
DAY ONE Narkanda – Hatu Peak – Narkanda – Tani Jubbar – Narkanda
We arrive in Shimla early morning from where our representative picks you up and drives to Narkanda (65kms – 2hrs). We check into our hotel and rest till the fatigue wears off. After a hearty breakfast we hit the road again, this time on our mountain bikes. First up is the 20kms acclimatization ride till Tani Jubbar ( a small mountain lake) in the apple country of Kotgarh. We ride back from there to treak ourselves to lunch at the Hotel and after a brief stop we start the ride towards Hatu peak (3000mts), the highest peak in this region. The ride up is only 6kms, however the gradient is steep (9%). The support vehicle is right behind you, should you feel worn out. The vies from Hatu offer the spectrum of the Himalayas with the Sutlej valley to your west and the Uttarakhand Himalayas to your east. Enjoy the evening at the top and then ride back to the comfort of your Hotel.
DAY TWO Narkanda – Sungri – Rohru (Ride 77kms)
After a hearty breakfast start the ride by 10:00AM. First up is the 18kms to Baghi most of it uphill, followed by another mix of uphill and downhill riding of 14kms to Khadrala, also our lunch halt. All of this ridgeline riding as we continue 15kms towards Sungri from where it’s a breezy downhill of 29kms to Rohru, on the banks of the river Pabbar. O/N HPTDC Hotel Chanshal
DAY THREE Rohru to Larot to Chanshal pass (ride 62kms)
It’s a 62kms long ride today so we start really early at 6:00AM and have our breakfast at Chirgaon 15kms away. Here we cross the river and ride towards Larot crossing the Andhra stream enroute. Chanshal Pass is 18kms from here through switchbacks cut through glades. Be careful as all of this is offroad. We reach the pass by late afternoon and set up camp. We light a bonfire in the evening and prepare our favorites in the kitchen with some grilled on the bonfire trout too. O/N camp
DAY FOUR Climb Chanshal Peak. Chanshal Pass to Rohru to Shimla (120kms)
We rise early and attempt to climb atop the Chanshal Peak (4520m), two hours. We just scaled the highest peak in Shimla district. Hike back down and we bid adieu to Chanshal and drive back to Shimla making a halt at Rohru for lunch. Drive further to reach Shimla in time (19:30hrs) to catch the Volvo bus back to Delhi.
COST OF THE TRIP
Double Occupancy: Rs. 13,200/- Per Person
Single Occupancy: Rs. 17000/- Per Person
TRANSPORT OPTIONS (Delhi – Shimla – Delhi)
For travel from Delhi to Shimla and back one can choose between rail & road. There are lots of Public Transport like Volvos, Deluxe and ordinary buses plying between Delhi/Chandigarh and Shimla. We can arrange transportation for you on actuals.
Temperatures and climate vary according to the altitude. The summer days are warm with brilliant blue skies (max 20°C. min 5°C), but the weather in mountainous areas can be very unpredictable. Come prepared for chilly evenings and a small possibility of rain. Early morning starts and descents at altitude require good quality weather gear.
ABOUT OUR CYCLING TRIPS
In line with our philosophy of giving our clients an up, close & personal experience we Endeavour to make our clients ride the best possible routes in a specific region and give them the true local flavor. Unlike a lot of other companies who prescribe to the totally ‘rough it out’ way of running their trips we don’t mind admitting that we like our clients to be cycling with some bit of comfort. We as a company believe that tasty/nutritious food, great campsite and a comfortable bed at the end of the day is very essential to an outdoors trip

You will be at the campsite around 3:00 p.m. This gives you enough time to relax, take pictures, arrange your luggage and enjoy cups of tea/coffee. You will get an evening snack which is followed by dinner at about 7:30 p.m. Clients normally spend some time together in the mess tent or outside chatting up before retiring for the day at around 9:00 p.m. We have the support vehicles with us so on any stretch if one is not feeling up to it one can hitch a ride in the vehicle.
Accommodation: At Narkanda and Rohru you will stay in very good quality A grade hotels. At Chanshal Pass we will be camping out. You will have the option to upgrade if required. All accommodation is mentioned in the itinerary.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT FOR THE TRIP TO RUN
The Chanshal pass ride is an expedition in itself and requires huge logistics. To make it sustainable and at the same time maintain our service and hospitality standards, we require that a minimum of 4 people are participating. If that is not happening we will either refund you the full amount or urge you to join the next trip or any other trip we organize. The refund will take about 15 business days.
Please note that Riders must bring their own mountain (all terrain) cycles. The roads generally are not suitable for bikes fitted with road tyres (slicks), even though some sections are in reasonably good condition. There will be sections higher up that will be in poor condition due to snow/slush from the winter months, possible landslip, and use of the road by heavy vehicles at times. Hybrid bikes with ‘chunky’ mountain tyres are most suitable. Riders should also bring a range of spare parts which may include; chain links or chains, spare tyres and pump, at least 4 spare tubes and puncture repair kit, cables, pedals and a good tool kit.
Though there would be a mechanic accompanying us carrying a good repair kit and spares but it is still necessary for everyone to bring some spares; this also ensures you have parts that will fit your bike. There will be a staff member to assist with running repairs when we are biking and at our overnight stops should problems be more complicated. As a general rule, less complex or high tech bikes are easier to fix and obtain parts for if necessary. If you plan to buy a new bike before the trip, make sure you are completely familiar with it prior to departing. You should fit at least 2 one litre water bottles to your bike. Water will be available from the back up vehicle.
For riders unfamiliar with our Himalayan organization you will be very well catered for. Our cycling expedition takes us into remote regions where there are no villages and no hotels. Therefore during the cycling expedition we will be camping. We will select camps away from the road where you will sleep in comfortable two person tents and be looked after by our crew who will come with us. They will prepare all meals including your early morning cup of tea. All you have to do is pack your gear into your kitbag. During the day you will be accompanied by a support vehicle which is at your disposal should you not wish to cycle. Your other entire luggage will go into the Luggage van accompanying us.
